Get a low mileage (Under 50K)4-5 yr old Toyota Yaris or Corolla, expect to pay $5-$8K then drive it to 300K then repeat process.

sounds like good advice....I might buy a 2-3 yr old used Yaris instead or Corolla - but expect to pay $11-13k.

Depends on the car. You can probably get into some of the cheapest new cars around in the low to mid teens, with the sky as the upper limit. Add late model used the mix, and anything is possible.

Same with operating costs. Some cheap cars can be expensive to operate, some moderately priced cars cheap, with fuel, insurance, maintenance, etc, all as variables.

Do you have any other criteria for narrowing down the herd as to choice. Looking for the cheapest, longest lasting? Something affordable within a certain price range?

If you care about nothing else, it is reasonable that you could spend around $10k-$12k and get a solid enough car that would last 10 years.
