I went by the muffler man the other day, they had two trucks for sale. One was a 2006 Ford F-350 for $3950, it had a little rust on the rockers and the bumper, and was equipped with a utility box on the back (like the trucks you see working for the phone company) and next to it was a 1997 Ford F-150 for $3000. I realize that the F-350 was work truck and I'm guessing it got it's fair share of abuse but I would think it would be worth significantly more than a plane jane F-150 that is nine years older.

What engine? The 6.0 Turbo Diesel Power Stroke had a lot of problems, but even so that price sounds low.

Are you sure the F350 price isn't $13,950?

It's impossible to tell whether or not the price was good without more information. If the 2006 F350 was a 6.0L diesel with 300k+ miles and major engine issues that got dumped by a fleet, that price could be pretty good assuming the buyer is really just looking for a chassis and it's going to need an overhaul. On the other hand, the F150 may have been single owner well cared for truck that had a new remanned engine put in it 10k miles ago.

Basically there is nowhere near enough info to know what is or isn't a good deal and the price on the F350 isn't too far off of what a heavily used and abused fleet truck with issues would sell for.

Avoid any of the Triton engines in YMs before 2004, like that 97. These engines are plagued with short plug threads in the heads and spitting a plug is common. There are 2 fixes, buy new heads or put a helicoil in one. Helicoil is a temporary fix and will come out. Avoid any 5.4 3v engine with the 2 piece plugs and cam phasers as they are known problem child. The F350 if gas, will be a 2v 5.4 and they are fairly decent engines but the price doesn't sound right for it to have much life left in it.

I am guessing the f350 has a 6.0 or 300,000 miled on a 5.4.
