Problem is, the cross-overs are very tall in design, and not really low and car-like, such as an old-fashioned wagon was (and these are still sold by all companies in Europe ). I would only consider the Cadillac, Acura, Subaru Outback, and BMW/Mercedes/VW/Audi from your list to be real wagons.
Crossovers are tall? I wouldn't say that. You definitely sit down into a Flex, a Venza, a Crosstour, etc, as opposed to climbing UP as you do in a SUV. And considering most are built off of some variant of a car's chassis, I would say they lean more towards a car than a truck/SUV.
I still have a significant fleet of wagons, and making more at the moment. (B4 Passat; 52 mpg w/ 25 gal tank... It is very popular to find a lower mileage GLX and swap in a TDI )
My wagons are pretty wimpy compared to my friend who has a Checker 'Limo Wagon', for 'hauling' his kid's soccer team
Passat wagon + my 2000GWR Snowbear' utility trailer can do most tasks. (I even used it as a 'cross country 'hearse'' when I had to bury 'dad'.) I am making a slide in 'tear-drop' camper, so I will have a 45 mpg 'motorhome' with my wagon. (also making outdoor shower, hot water heater for cooking, and modular camping goodies.)
Burning cooking, heating, waste oil or JetA can make for pretty cheap 'travels'.
Not quite the same as the Old's vista cruiser we had as a family...
What about the reliability? I'm always cautious about German cars because of supposedly nasty reliability problems...
I have autotrader.com doing a search for me.... 2003 - 2007 VW TDI Wagon 5speed. I get notified about once every two weeks.
Last one that came up ... had around 80k on it and a 2004...asking price was 14k. I went to a VW dealer to inquire about a new one...they added 2500 to msrp. The demand is there...but not enough to change the bottom line of the car companies.
I like them but with gas @ $4.25/gallon, it's not very affordable to operate with their not so desirable gas mileage.
Like any vehicle if you operate it wrong ,or in a wasteful manner, your gas cost will put a big dent in you wallet!!!
That said, for the versatility the Suburban offers there is no competition that will measure up to what the Suburban can do.
