My transmission has started shuddering. Only when I'm stopped, shift into neutral, and then shift again into D or R. Why do this? Good point. But it never used to do this, so something has changed. Otherwise, it's smooth through all gears, and smooth when initially put into gear.

Other facts/red herrings:
Used engine just put in, some new ATF added. Not sure what kind, but I assume cheap Dex/Merc. ATF level is correct. Shifts noticeably smoother than it used to, but now this shudder as well. Also, there was a slow leak from the pan a while back, and I may have driven it with a bit low ATF before I had the engine put in.

Anyone have ideas about what might be causing the shudder? Cheap remedies to try?

Car: 1998 Nissan Altima.

Sounds to me like you have a low speed miss in the engine. I would start there.

Hmmm. I forgot to mention that there's a leak from a crack in the exhaust manifold. I'm going to change it as soon as I can get the $*#@ EGR tube off it.

Default Solved

Solved it. 3M Fuel System Tune-Up Kit to clean throttle body, ect. Shudder is gone. Other benefits are less vibration at idle and less acceleration lag. Great product.

So you think you fixed an exhaust manifold leak with a "tune-up" kit? Are they paying you for advertisement? If this is not a bogus thread, then be prepared for your problem to be back.

I wish - the manifold leak is still there, lol, and I'm hoping for even better performance when I replace the header next week. The previous post about a low-speed miss got me thinking about the engine as a possible cause. Then I noticed that the rpms really dropped during the shudder, so again I thought maybe the engine. I used the kit to clean the throttle body and fuel system, and the result really was amazing; this is the best mechanic-in-a-bottle thing I have ever done by far. But, I can't say how that would have compared to a $2 can of throttle body cleaner. So bottom line is the manifold evidently was not most of the problem.
