Does anyone have any experience of information about adding a CNG tank to a gasoline car? Is it expensive? They are buliding compressed gas stations in South Florida, and the price per gallon (adjusted to MPG) is only about $2.00, so it would make sense to have a tank installed, as it would save about $180 per month.
You'll need to do a complete conversion to run on CNG. More to it than a tank. Check with a local gas company and see who they recommend, then get a bid.
CNG cars are common in parts of South America with pros and cons... save on fuel but issues include less power, shorter range, less trunk space, and fewer places to refuel. Consider that longer distance trips and resale can present a real downside.
I'm sorry, but considering the dangers involved, I would never purchase an aftermarket conversion kit to run a car on CNG. The risk is just too great for the minimum benefits. If you're really keen on a CNG car, put your money aside for a vehicle engineered and built for CNG (Honda Civic).
I have several fleets that I work with that are running CNG cars. The trade off is a little less power (honestly not noticable in normal driving, less range (if you want to retain the ability to still run gas), less trunk space (the tanks have to go somewhere) and limited refueling options.
The conversions are pretty cheap and fall into two categories: total conversion where the car can only run on CNG or bi-fuel conversion where it can run on either gas or CNG. Bi-fuel cars are nice as you can't get "stuck" somewhere with no CNG refueling, but you have a rather limited CNG range since the factory fuel tank is left in place.
Conversions should only be done by certified installers using EPA certified kits that meet your states inspection criteria. In general, the installers only want to work with new/newer vehicles, so don't think you can role a 1998 Crown Vic in and get it swapped to CNG, they probably won't do it.
Here is a guide that lists available kits by model/engine and also gives a list of installers.
Conversion kits on ebay sell for about $500 for DIY.
The kits on EBAY do not include the tank and any shields if needed.
