I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport. Lately the engine light's been on a lot. The engine has been making strange noises. How much should it cost repair the engine?

need more info,
it could be as cheap as a belt ($20) or $2000 for a rebuild.
How long have you owned?
How many miles?
Climate / region?
Noise only, or performance issues too.
CEL on BEFORE noises started or at same time?
Do you have an oil pressure guage?
Was it over heated.
Oil type and change frequency?
Is it RPM specific?
Road speed related?
Only when cold (or hot)
Deep knock, or chirpy rattle?
It is handy to use a broom handle (or similar) as a 'sounding' tool. Place against ear and set other end in various positions where noises can originate. (Alternator is my first place to look / listen, and one of less expensive / more common repairs), Then water pump, little more expensive, little less likely.
First thing i'd do is stop driving it as you may turn a small problem into a large problem..
A description of the noise and when and where it happens most. might be informative in a forum diagnosis..

All that the "engine light" means is that there are emissions codes in the vehicle's computer. You need to have it scanned for the codes and then either look up the codes yourself, put them in here and have people tell you what you need or take them to a shop with the vehicle. Autozone, as well as some other auto parts stores, will scan the vehicle's computer and give you a print out of the codes for free.
Stating that you hear "strange noises" does not give anyone enough information to help you with what the noise may be caused by. Stating if the noise is squeaking, knocking, grinding, etc. is much more helpful. Nobody here would be able to tell you how much a repair would be without knowing what has to be fixed.
