Since I have had either no repairs or truly minimal repairs on all of my cars over the past 20 years or so, my answer is that maintenance is the biggest expense, for sure.
However, this situation can be reversed very readily.
If someone ignores maintenance, or is very lax with maintenance, he/she will most definitely have big repair bills as the result. The difference is that you can schedule maintenance, whereas mechanical breakdowns that stem from lack of maintenance tend to happen in inconvenient places, at inconvenient times.
A responsible person will maintain his/her car at least as well as the mfr specifies. And, even if these maintenance expenses tend to mount up over the years, the careful maintainer will be safer and will experience much less inconvenience than the person who ignores proper maintenance.
I spend a lot on maintenance therefore I spend very little on repairs.
Try this with my Dodge Caravan. I am very compulsive with maintenance but between 110K miles to 130K miles this is the list of things that needed to be done;
Two rear brake cylinders
Master brake cylinder
Fuel pump and sending unit (X2 due to defective part)
Alternator, which lead to belt change, then needed tensioner and idler pulley's.
Starter
Radiator, twice, again defective part
Rear vent window motor
This is on top of regular stuff like tires, oil and ATF change, brake fluid flush. Thankfully I do most of the work myself, but still it is costing a lot to keep this car on the road.
I spend far more on repairs, the car has done over 100 thousand miles, but I’m not talking mechanical repairs, most are corrosion related. Maybe if I did more mileage, things would be different!
