Please don't chastise me but...I have had a Japanese-made car for many yrs., bought because at the time, American cars were not as dependable.
Now things have changed and I am interested in next time buying American. Moderate in expense, hatchback and with 6 cylinders....no monster suvs, please

Your opinions? Thanks-
We had a 2000 Focus 2-door (of course) and we liked it just fine.

I hate to make it unanimous (so far) but we rented a Focus while traveling on vacation last weekend and I was very impressed. With only two of us
there was tons of room for a small car, though we didn't have to use the back seat. Handled well, plenty of power and after 4 days in southern CA it only took $26 gas.
The subject is going to come up sooner or later as it inevitably does when a thread like this pops up: When you say "American" car, do you mean an American marque, or a car actually assembled here in the U.S.? Because there's seemingly more divergence than convergence between the two any more. Do you want a GM built in Ontario, or a Subaru built in Indiana? Or an Italian-owned Chrysler?

I don't think there are 6 cylinder hatchbacks beside BMW1 and VW R32, but I doubt they are available in US. Go Focus or Fiesta, even it's designed in UK/Germany it's still very american brand.
