I have a smog due on my 85 olds but i have a few holes in the middle of my muffler. I can feel the air come out of the muffler but its not as strong as it coming out of the tailpipe. Whats my chances of passing smog & should i just muffler patch the holes like i did just before my last smog that i passed on 09 ? I have put on around 5000 miles since then & the car runs good. A muffler patch is less then $10.00 & im going to the same test only station i went to last time.

I personally would not do anything as it will actually lower your emission readings with the holes. My Escort has a pretty bad exhaust manifold leak out of the header, and has had it for years. It always passes emissions each year with flying colors because it barely blows anything out the tailpipe.
The machine isn't stupid..! If you have leaks anywhere in your exhaust system, the machine will tell you the sample is deluded and the test will be terminated.
Come back after you fix the problem, and we'll test you again...

In a way that makes sense. I do get enough out of the tailpipe but not as much as i would with a new or repaired muffler. I dont smell any exhaust in the car & the muffler is about 3 feet in front of the right rear tire. The thing they stick in the tailipe to test emissions cant fit into my muffler (holes are way too small). I guess ill find out next week or so. I do have good suction coming out of the tailipe. Nevada isnt as strict as ca though so im not sure if that will fly.

That is incorrect. My car has a blatantly obvious exhaust leak out the front header. The car is loud as hell. It does blow exhaust out the back, but not much. The guys at the smog testing stations could care less, as do the machines as it does register. It always passes each year.

Are the smog machines in nv & ca similar & is nv strict like ca ? In ca they also test your gas cap & lord knows what else. Someday they will check your tire pressure & if its too low you receive a fail. We have crazy & greedy lawmakers so its just a matter of time.

I would say Nevada is very strict. They do test gas caps here too. We have to get our vehicles tested each year unlike AZ (where I am from) which was 2 years. In Las Vegas, the smog stations are all privately run by places such as Jiffy Lube, Goodyear, Firestone, etc. In AZ, we had to go to state run emission stations. I am sorry to keep referencing AZ, but that is the only place I have to compare NV too. I have never been to California emissions.
I would get the heck out of that police state as fast as possible. Many of the states in the middle of the country have no vehicle inspections of any kind. At the very least you could get a 1975 or older vehicle to make life a bit easier for you.
Smog every year is stupid. It should be every 4 yrs & cars 25 yrs or older exempt from smog. I would of been exempt had those (censored) in sacramento not changed the law some yrs ago. The greedy state gets $8.25 per car that passes (electronic smog certificate). Ca emissions test are tougher this year so im not sure what will happen. How much is your registration ? Mine increased 13.00 to $80.00 (double from 10 yrs ago).

I rarely see 75 & older cars in ca & the ones i do see are in mint condition (classics). Plus parts for very old cars are not as easy to find anymore incl in the wrecking yards.
