Well their should not be any inspections there at all. With the 1975 and older vehicles your main parts finding concern would be body parts and since rust is usually not a big problem in California I would not worry about it plus with the internet you can find anything. Local auto parts stores support all the mechanical parts for these older vehicles so no issue there. Also my registration is 27 dollars all done online in my chair and best of all no stupid inspections and my vehicles are far from stock.

If we didnt have smog inspections in ca then people would be disconnecting the cat converter & all that good stuff.

I think everything is cheaper in arkansas. We have corrupt politicians who are liars, thieves & whores & controlled by the public unions.

With the older vehicles that's what most people do around here and steel yards pay quite well for them. The newer vehicles pretty much have to run them.

I once had a 78 mustang that had a bad cat converter so i took it off & cleaned it all out & the car ran fine. I didnt care for the hollow noise & i drove the car around for about a year with expired tags. After it blew a head gasket i sold it to the wrecking yard for $150.00 & then bought a decent running 1978 monte carlo from my bro with out of state plates. I drove the car with out of state plates for 3 yrs & then sold it to some guy for $500.00 (car had alot of new parts incl brakes). That guy drove it for 6 month on the same plates until the engine blew @ 150k miles. I was just lucky to never been caught or in a auto accident. I dont do that anymore cause the risks are not worth it.

I know in Texas (when I lived there) you have inspections every year, plug smog check depending on the county you lived in, as not all counties did emissions testing. If the car was over 24 years it was exempt from emission testing. I'm glad where I live now I don't have to deal with inspections of any kind!

The state wants to get rid of the old cars on the roads. I bet the creeps in the legislature drive new cars (they earn approx 100k + perks, benefits, etc). I bet they dont know what its like to be poor so they could care less.

Anyways...im just going to take my car as is to the test only smog station & hope for the best. My registration says to go to test only so i have no choice. If i fail ill just patch up the muffler & get retested. Im not sure if their will be a xtra charge to be retested but i think retests are no charge 1x only.

Pretty much. And as long as they don't care less, then I won't care less still driving my '87 wagon on the road that's more reliable than alot of the stuff that's out there now. Unless the state wants to buy us all new cars (which you know they won't) then I will keep what I got!

Depending on the state some will give you a certain amount of time to fix the problem that caused the fail and then get retested at no charge. In TX they gave you 15 days.

It is not the state that wants to get rid of old cars, it is the country. That is why I was so against cash for clunkers. The program effectively pushed up used car prices whether they were a gas guzzler or not. I bought my Escort back in 2007 for $500. Reliable cars at that price do not exist anymore. I see 1980's Sentra's going for nearly $2,000 now.
