I'm looking for advice on what the best pickup truck I can get for under $5000 is.

To let you knwo what I'll be using it for for the most part it will be a daily driver to work so want something good on gas mileage. It wont be used for work purposes on a daily basis but I do buy storage units at auction and its a pain always having to borrow or rent a truck. I also do some landscaping work on the side and home improvements on my own place and it would come in handy for this as well.

I'm thinking a smaller truck may be whats best for me even though I wouldn't mind getting something a lil bigger like an F150.

I currently drive a 4 cylander camry so am used to the good fueld efficiencey and never having to get any work done.

Any advice? Btw, 5k is like max, would prefer to spend like $3500 so I dont have to finance but would spend 5k if I coudl find a good deal on say a Nissan Frontier which would be my dream truck

Age is not as important as condition. Avoid the high end models and keep it basic, Research the model for common complaints. Avoid car dealers. Compare price and mileage on autotrader to see the range of what the market is selling them for. Inspect it well and never get a 4 wheel drive unless you must have it. To repair a worn out 4 wheel drive can cost more than the truck...Dont get one a teen driver has had.

I agree. Brand is not important here. Condition of the vehicle is !! So look for a well cared for truck driven and maintained by am mature adult.

Warning! If you go all brand blind over this truck or that truck you will get what you deserve......trouble.

What makes you say that?

There's lots of reliable trucks under $5k.

Want to laugh some more? We picked up a 92k mile 1993 S-10 for $5k. And for the next 10 years I put another 90k of unmerciful beating tire smoking Bo Duke sliding miles on it. Yes I was hard on that truck.

You would have thought how I treated it the old girl would have finally laid down on me but she never did. She was still running and driving the same when I sold her since I had no room left in the driveway.

No you may not get a 5 year old used truck for under $5k but you can certainly find some 10 year old deals out there.

Thanks, I thought that was odd the guy saying you couldnt get one.

I'd love a Nissan Frontier but obviously that would be more money. I'm focusing on the Rangers now. Doesn't have to be new, anything with the 90's bodystyle after the boxy one would be fine with me.

Is it worth getting a 98 or newer? I thought I saw something on a video about how its a different frame 98 and newer?

I've seen some with high 90's low 100k going for anywhere from 2500-6000 kinda surprised by the wide vary in price

I have seen 2004 Rangers for less than $5000.
The Ford Sport Trac is built on the Ranger frame up to 2006, this would give you a 4 door truck and still be under the $5000 mark.
The 2007 and up are built on a unique frame almost identical to the F150 but 6 inches narrower. Ford Sport Trac was discontinued at the end of 2010 as the Explorer went unibody and the Sport Trac is dependent on a frame.
