One of the old school drivers who was successful in many different types of cars/racing.

R.I.P. 90's a pretty good run.

I'm old enough to remember when he was driving. No matter what he drove he was exceptional. That's why they hired him to drive the Indy turbo car (I was there.) : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STP-Paxton_Turbocar

I always hoped he would become an F1 driver.

Many of the greats died racing. Racing in that era and living to be 90 is a miracle.

I honestly thought he had passed a number of years ago. I was rather shocked when I saw the news of his passing today.

What a car. Shame that the bearing went at the end of that race.

I saw him win in 63 and qualify in the turbo, he could drive anything. If I remember correctly, when he qualified in 63 it was the 1st official 150MPH run. Seems tame by today;s speeds, but those tin cars were high speed coffins

What a great driver. RIP Rufus

So true! I still have a program from the '66 USGP and of the 22 entrants listed, 7 went on to die in racing accidents.
