My local "asphalt bullring", like many others, is operating on a limited schedule, due to the inroads of people looking for their "rural piece of paradise" building their dream homes 2 miles down the road from a track that has been in operation for the last 50-60 years.....then whining about the noise. Therefore, this track now opens only 6 times a year.

I've been a life-long fan of automobile racing, and in earlier years, attended the races at this track, religiously, and in fact, managed to even get some "on track time", back in the mid-80s. However, I got married in 1990, and my attentions were diverted for a while, so I hadn't begun going back to the track until a couple of years ago.

OK, that's the back story, leading up to my question of "how young is too young". In years gone by, you generally didn't see drivers getting involved, and on the track, until they were at least 18, and with respect to the faster classes of cars, not until they had 2-3 years of experience in the lower class of cars.

Two nights ago, a friend and I went to he local track, to watch the show. The featured class, for those who are familiar with them, was the "asphalt modified", and there was a sub-class known as the "602 modified", which are basically the upper class cars, but with lower powered engines. In the 602 class were two "second generation" drivers, which is cool, HOWEVER these 2 drivers were 14-15 years of age! They're wheeling 450HP, open wheeled race cars, and can't even hold a legal drivers license.

WOW!!

It's not unusual for drivers 14-15 years old to have 8-10 years of karting, 1/4 midget, MX, or other forms of racing experience under their belts.

That may be true, but it's a pretty big step up, from a kart, or 1/4 midget, to an asphalt modified.....

From what I've seen at local bullrings, your driving is everything. Age? Not so much.

I'll note in the OP you commented on the age of two drivers yet said nothing about how they drove.

Why is that?

On one hand, they drove quite well, BUT on the other hand, there were only 3 cars in the race......

Kyle Busch has a bunch of youtube videos of his kid, Brexton racing. I think it's quarter midgets, not sure. I haven't really watched any of them.

But.. That kid is 6, I think.

Anyway.. Look at Matt Martin. Sometimes, kids stick with it. Sometimes.. They outgrow it. Sometimes.. They just find other things they'd rather do.

While this may be true, it also allows new drivers to experience higher levels of racing.

Think of the NHRA.

You don't get to drive TF, unless you've previously qualified TA. You don't get to drive TA unless you've previously qualified in AA. And on down the line to Street classes.

(BTW~ There's a HUGE difference between TA & TF.)

Other than about 75mph....
