Jessi Combs—vehicle builder, racer, fabricator, TV personality, and all-around automotive legend—was killed on Tuesday in a crash while attempting to break her own land-speed record in southeast Oregon. She was 36.
Back in 1977, deaf stuntwoman Kitty O'Neil averaged ann official 512.710 mph for two runs in a rocket car, also at the Alvord Desert. It was reported that she went over 600 mph during an unofficial run. Her rocket car had 3 wheels, not 4.: https://www.si.com/vault/1977/01/17/...lory-and-gloom
Because I live in Oregon, I visit that area every now and then. The Alvord Desert is extremely remote and pristine. I'm surprised they got permission to make the speed attempt. After Kitty O'Neil, they said they would no longer allow it.
Here is a photo I took of the Alvord Desert from the mountain they mention in the article:
jessi combs was probably one of my favorite presenters on teh various car show she worked on. i had big hopes for her when i first saw her on extreme four by four. i was not disappointed.
The investigation found that the crash was caused by a broken wheel. She died by blunt-force trauma to the head (not surprising when you see how exposed and unprotected the driver was) before the car burst into flames.
