I don't mind DW. He's a bit of a cornball, but he has skins on the wall.
Mikey, OTOH, is like fingernails on a chalkboard. Gets way more credit than he deserves because of his 2 Daytona 500 wins. Is a yuck monkey when the cameras are rolling but when they're off he has a reputation of being an unlikable, arrogant jackass.
If i had to choose, i would obviously take DW over Mikey.. I don't mind Mikey too much but his antics seem too scripted at times.. DW is just classic NASCAR, hard to NOT like him..
I think they've both been good for nascar. Likable or not they both promote the sport and keep it positive. I liked Michael a lot more when he was on Speed doing the show with Schrader then now. He's a moron on TV now, always 'on'. It's fake and over-the-top and obviously so. DW's shtick gets a bit old but having Gordon in the booth has helped. DW as a driver definitely was good for nascar. He had a big mouth and backed it up. People love that and love to hate that, either way it generates emotion and interest.
DW was my driver from the DiGard days right up until the sad ending of his career at DarWal Racing. He was mouthy, but he backed it up on the track. He also never "crossed the line" of blatant disrespect and contempt for the sport (ala Kyle Busch).
However, after the first few seasons in the Fox booth, he became Hollywood and lost me. So, there are good memories and not so good memories with him.
Michael was a puzzle from the get-go. How he could have a winless career for so long and then step into the DEI machine and score plate wins was inconceivable. But good on him. He does come across as over the top on TV and I guess that is his schtick.
I was mad at him for leaving DEi and taking NAPA, especially when his company started with the jet fuel allegations. MWR made some stupid moves that eventually tanked the company. That was a shame to see.
But again, good on him for doing what he did in the sport.
