I'm all for the principles behind the SAFER barrier, but it has a huge flaw that's gonna get a driver and/or spectators killed if it's not fixed. The barrier sticks out from the wall and catch fencing a good 3-4 feet and it acts like a ledge. Cars are getting stuck and riding along the top of the barrier. Parker Kligerman's car got stuck up there today and had the front clip ground off by the fence. What happens if, God forbid, an open cockpit car gets turned upside down and does the same thing? Will it take a driver getting decapitated or someone in the stands getting killed by flying debris for them to fix it?
I don't think there is a perfect design for the safer barrier. The broadcast crew never miss an opportunity to applaud them. They certainly have saved some drivers from injury! I am not sure what they could do to prevent what you have pointed out other than doubling their height which would impair the view of those fans sitting near the bottom row.

The only idea I have that comes to mind is an angled cap of some sort that would cover the top up. It has to be designed to deflect the cars away from the fence instead of guiding them along it.

The safest race car & tracks are ones not being used other than that you are kidding yourself.
Its really the fencing that needs changing. Not going to stop a lot of car parts or a engine as we have seen getting into crowd. A lot of parts came thru that fence in shootout the other nite. The hole created was huge like last year when engine came thru into stands.
Did you notice the passenger side WINDOW fly OVER the catch fence during yesterdays Truck Series practice!
The announcers commented several times how the flag waver had to duck from being hit but only once mentioned that the window landed on the Stand side of the catch fence. I guess there is a reason why those seats are the cheap seats..
why dont we just mandate that the racecars be made of styrofoam, that way they cant really hurt anyone. you have to face the fact that racing is not exactly the safest sport for the drivers or the fans. you can do only so much to prevent injury or death, but unfortunately bad things happen from time to time. if you want the safest race possible, watch it on TV, or in one of the enclosed suites at the top of the stands.
Danica hit the wall without the barrier nearly head on last night at probably close to 150MPH. She was fine which says the cars at least are much, much stronger than in the past.
