Just got back after spending a week in Fl and four days at the speedway.
Long time NASCAR fan and occasional road race watcher but always wanted to see the 24 hrs.
Had a great time "camping" in a motor home in the infield and watching the racing in 2-3 hr stints in the stands.Consumed more than a few adult beverages in between race watching.
The racing was good but I will leave it to the "experts" to explain how much better it is to other forms of racing.
I will scratch the Rolex 24 hrs off my bucket list just like I have the Daytona 500, The NHRA Nationals, the Opera at the Met in NYC and many other "must do" events.
If you are a motor sports fan it is one race you should seen in person at least once.
Still on my list is an F1 event, not for the racing but just to be able to experience another "must do" event.
lived in Daytona back in the early 80's and did catch one of these and had a blast, recall there was a beefed-up "stock" Comaro that raced right up with the big fellas the whole time and had a respectable showing. Camped in the infield out of our car trunk and met and saw many strange personalities and events...I wonder whatever happened to the chicken man? He looked like Aqualung, was wearing a white wedding dess and hockey skates and was dragging a rubber (I think) chicken behind him on a leash. Wish I could find that picture.
I use to go, but the last few years the temps were below normal and with the wind off the ocean, I froze my ass off. So I started watching on TV, SPEED channel. Had good coverage and a mix of identifiable cars. This year, the ALMS and Rolex are combined as TUDOR but still only 11 races. With speed gone, TV coverage was with foxsports 1 and 2 with a new annoying twist. During the many commercial breaks, they would break for 1.5 minutes, come back for 30 seconds and then have another 1.5 minute commercial.
Didn't like the multi channel Barrett Jackson coverage by fox or the way of having commercials during the race. Hope there will be season long Continental Tire race coverage.
Pretty good race this year! Thankfully both drivers are recovering from the big red flag wreck earlier in the race. Questionable yellow at end. IMSA made a questionable penalty call on last lap and did the right thing and reversed it.
24 hour is a bucket list for me to actually race. Longest enduro Ive ever run is 6 hours. Thatll have to wait till I find a paid ride. Unfortunately a rental for the Daytona is way more than for 24 hour races in Europe like the Nurburgring and Spa etc. I have clients that have done 3 24 hour races in Europe for the price of one 24 hours atbDaytona in a GT car. One of them winning their class in Spa.
For a spectator event, the 12 hours of Sebring is 1000 times more enjoyable. THAT is one that every motorsport fan needs to experience at least once. Hopefully Ill be there this year racing in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo race. Fingers crossed.
I really can't stand that Delta Wing, but I have grown up with this general motorsport (IMSA GTP/GTO/GTU...I miss those days). It was actually a pretty engaging race, with some great equipment. I am a Viper fan, myself. But I will miss the Camaros.
