Does anyone have the background on the concept of "lock-in's" for kids?
Is there grant money available for these things or what?

Where I used to live some of the skating rinks had lock ins. Not sure if that is what you were meaning. I have not heard about it at schools.

Depends on the age. I had friends in highschool that went to church lock-in's and some came home pregnant! No lie.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. It is a lock-in for teens at a Gatti-land. The group that is doing the lock in is a school group.

Personally, I don't like the idea and never really thought much about them till the question was asked, "can I go to a lock-in??"

That's why I decided to ask if anyone was familiar with them here.

Yeah I am a teacher and some of the things that I heard took place at lock ins would make me seriously consider allowing my kid go. I went to a few when I was young, and I never did anything, but that was the kind of kid I was. I talked to 10-12 year old kids and was shocked and outraged at the things that took place. Really really look into how much supervision will be in place. My kids mainly said the bathrooms were where things took place, because of no supervision. So, moral of the story look into it, know your kid, know who they are going with, and why they are going. Just be an involved parent and I think it will be fine. You don't want to remove a good opportunity because of what some kids do. Like I said I went to a few and always had a great, innocent, time.

My kids have been to 'lockins' at their school (private) in middle and high school. Basically, they're 'locked into' they gym, they play games, watch movies, hang out, overnight. At 7 am, parents come and pick them up. They've all been very well chaperoned and perfectly safe.

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't looking to make my decision based on responses. I was looking for any input from people that have experienced them.
I firmly believe kids need sleep and I find no redeeming qualities in keeping them up for 24 hours stimulated with video games, and mountain dew.

Sleep is one of those few things that kids can control by themselves, be it with mountain dew or books. If they want to stay up all night, they will- it doesn't have to be at a sleepover or lock-in!
