Hi -- am wondering where you all like to go for your vacations at Spring and winter break? Texas is so huge; I am just curious what areas are manageable with a week off for the kids? You input is much appreciated!

When I was a kid, my parents took us to Tyler (my grandparents are there), and Sinton (more grandparents). Dallas (six flags), Bandera (Dude Ranch), Kerrville, Lake Corpus Christi, Camping on Lake Travis at Paleface, New Braunfels (tubing and schlitterbahn), Kerrville (grandma), Mexico, Galveston, New Orleans, Garner state park, West Texas, Goliad (some of these towns had a lot of early texas history and battlefields and they loved taking us to those), San Antonio,...I could probably go on and on. Oh, South Padre/Galveston/Surfside/Quintana/Rockport.

Cozumel, for a little diving. Great bargain if you don't mind a package deal. .

OOh, love Cozumel -- good point! It's great to hear of some other Texas cities that are fun to visit with family, too. Thanks for the input!

This may sound weird, but we are in Austin. I read in a magazine article once that suggested taking a vacation in YOUR OWN TOWN!

So, you figure out what all the tourists do when they come to Austin (for example: see the bats, Texas History Museum, Mt. Bonnell, Salt Lick, Music on 6th Street, Sunset at the Oasis, strolling Town Lake hike and bike trails, etc) and set aside time to be a tourist in your own town. The article said to even rent a hotel (since you'd be paying for that anyway). I haven't tried it yet, but I always thought the idea was interesting, if not weird.

But for real getaways, we like the Island House on North Padre Island. Great location, easy drive from Austin, and a good launching point for other activities in Corpus, Aransas Pass, Mustang Island. It's a really kid friendly place right on the seawall.

How far of a drive is Austin from North Padre Island? Is it a nice week-end trip?

It's just a few hours away. It's a great weekend trip.

I wouldn't spend a whole week there, but there's a lot to do with kids in San Antonio. They have Sea World, Natural Bridge, and a bunch more. And, of course, there's Shlitterbahn (sp?). Here's a good website showing the attractions:

No idea. But from traffic on I-35 every friday afternoon, it seems half the city has enough disposable income to take a trip every weekend.

By a few hours, do you mean about 3? I was thinking Padre Island was about 6-7 hrs from Austin.
