Hello! I will be relocating to Austin, TX in a couple months. My job is located off of River Place Blvd. Can someone give me an idea of best area(s) to live? I am single with no children. I would prefer a fairly quiet, safe neighborhood close to shopping, parks, recreation. I don't want to pay more than $800. I would also prefer an ethnically and culturally diverse area. I heard some things about Round Rock, but I'm not sure if this area would be a good fit or if its in close proximity to where I will be working. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Wow, most people would love to live out near Lake Travis. There are a fair number of apartments near by along Hwy 620. Unless you want long commutes to be part of your life style why not give it a try? Living close to work with a short commute could save you enough money to afford more for rent if needed. But I'd be surprised if you couldn't find something decent out there for $800. Lakeline Mall is just down the road on 620 and there are lots of other shops in the area.

For night life there are several great places with live music around the lake, such as the Oasis. But even if you drove into town to find the ethnic and cultural diversity you want, it would be cheaper to live out close to work. I know quite a few business professionals who are also minorities who live out in the Lake Travis area.

Round Rock is a good area and is not that far away. It is also more ethnically diverse, but seems like pretty middle class culture to me.

Races in Round Rock:
White Non-Hispanic (65.6%)
Hispanic (22.1%)
Other race (9.5%)
Black (7.7%)
Two or more races (2.6%)
American Indian (0.9%)
Vietnamese (0.7%)
Asian Indian (0.6%)

Edit to add: All of the areas from Lake Travis to Round Rock are pretty safe. Crime, especially violent crime is low over all of the Austin area, but is higher along the IH-35 corridor and a few other areas. Theft is a problem in Austin and the area.

Default Austin, the westside...

I would suggest Allandale, North Loop, or Hyde Park. Both are north-central, with easy access to RR 2222, which is the crosstown road that you would take to drive westward to your place of employment. Strategically located for excellent public transport. Buses, commuter rail (coming soon), and even within bicycling distance (with bike lanes) of the heart of all things Austin.

NOTE: This is very important. RR 2222 is known by many names as it winds through our lovely city. Study a map very carefully for a few minutes. I won't bore you with the dtails right now.

Enjoy.

I agree but I don't believe these areas are any more ethnically diverse then most of Austin. Definitly not as diverse as Round Rock.

Default Austin, the westside... 2

The areas that I suggested would be geographically convenient because they are about halfway between his/her job and the ethnic and cultural diversity hotbed of downtown Austin. The commute would be almost tolerable for the drive to work and back, in reverse of most people's commute. And it's pretty easy to get from north-central to downtown via bus/bike/train (soon)/or even walking, so there's no parking worries once you get down there. You could also enjoy all of the cute little cafes and bars right there in north-central that I miss so much, like Little Deli, Ginny's Little Longhorn, the Omelettry, Upper Crust, Phoenicia, LaLa's, and many more. Good times! Also it is very diverse ethnically and culturally.

Out of Lake Travis, Allandale, North Loop, and Hyde Park, what would you suggest are the order (best to worst) in regards to what I am looking for?

I want to add a few other details: I am a 34 yo woman. I do want to live close to work but I want easy access to entertainment and shopping as well. A safe, quiet area is most important as well as ethnic/cultural diversity.
