I just discovered that our house isn't as unincorporated as we were told. We're in a MUD and in Williamson County, outside the city of Austin limits. But in looking up info about fences and such, I learned that we're supposed to get building permits from the city. We had some extra outlets installed in our garage and an ac vent run down there about two years ago and were told by the contractors that we weren't in the city so we didn't need a permit. Does anyone know what we should do at this point?

Personally, in regard to the existing construction, I would not worry about it, water under the bridge. As long as you are comfortable that the contractors did a decent job, its not likely to ever become an issue for you.

I agree. Unless there is a safety issue you can identify, I don't see any benefit in trying to seek a permit or redo existing work. If it wasn't done to code (or even if it was, but then code changes, as it does) when you sell the house the inspector may mention it... but that is common in sales of older homes, so I don't think it will deter a buyer.

Did you come from CA also? I also live in a MUD and was trying to look up permits on my house when we DID have problems. I was surprised to learn that you don't even have to pull permits to put on a roof! In CA you have to pull one for everything! I wouldn't worry about it at this point. The only real purpose is to 1) generate revenue for the city and 2) have the city check to make sure the work was doen properly. If you have no concerns about the work, I'd let sleeping dogs lie.
