I currently live in Georgetown and plan on moving to Round Rock in August. I am so confused about which electric company to use. I have looked at different companies (TXU, Reliant, Direct Energy, StarTex, Champion, etc.), but it seems like every company has gotten bad, "stay away" reviews! I'm also having trouble deciphering the facts sheets about the companies. How can you tell if there are "hidden" fees or if the price they quote is what you will pay? Also, what are decent "move-in" rates for the area? I have been a responsible bill payer for my current company (City of Georgetown) so I shouldn't have to pay deposit fees, right? Any advice and/or guidance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I started with TXU and have since moved to Reliant. Make sure you look at the total cost per KWh. The "advertised rates" usually just give the energy charge rate. You also have to factor in surcharges and monthly customer charges.

For instance, on the Reliant Secure 12 E-plan, the energy charge is 12.9 cents with an Oncor surcharge of $2.43 and customer charge of $5. So if you use 500 KWh the cost is 14.4 cents/KWh, if you use 1000 KWh the cost is 13.6 cents/KWh and so on.

Oncor provides the electricity for most of the area. These other companies just send you a bill.

Check out PowertoChoose.org and find the best rate and sign up.

The powertochoose website that tourbound129 gave is the way to go. Since moving out of my apartment in Round Rock (forced to use TXU), I've used StarTex, Amigo and am currently using YEP. All three have been perfectly fine, no hidden fees for me, etc. For each, I have locked in a rate for 12 months and at the end of the 12 months asked if they can price match the best offer at the time. Both StarTex and Amigo were very understanding but said they couldn't do it - so I moved onto the next best company at the time. Just make sure you pay attention to when the 12 months (or whatever you lock in for) is up so you don't get stuck paying the market rate on the next bill (usually twice what you locked in at).
