I've been craving Vietnamese food ever since I arrived here over a week ago. I've tried two places. Hao Hao on William Cannon was dreadful, and whatever the one near Target is, wasnt much better. The dish didnt taste awful, but the meat was funky as hell.

I'm going to lose my mind without my Bun Bo Xao Xa Ot! (I had to look that up. lol )

Are you talking about Sunflower near Target north? If not, you might want to try it. It comes highly recommended by Vietnamese. And it's delicious.

Hmm... near Ben White Blvd, I think. I'm still learning all the roads here. I know there is a furniture store and a reptile store in the same plaza. Sorry, that really isnt any help, lol...

It really would have been good if the meat wasnt so weird. It was gooey, almost like the tried to bread it, and then failed.

My mom flew down to visit, and she ordered the strangest tasting coconut chicken ever. It almost doesnt even taste like real meat. Weird.

Soleil on N. Lamar - most of the good Vietnamese restaurants are up on North Lamar, where the large Vietnamese community is centered.

It's the place right by the large Strait music store, right? I've heard mixed reviews. Unfortunately, I think all the best Asian food is in the northern part of town. Try Sunflower as THL suggested (also by a Target, but on north 183). There are 2 other Pho places right by that Target, but they aren't as good as Sunflower. Sunflower also has more non-Pho/Bun selections. There is also a great little asian supermarket next door to Sunflower, where you can by everything to make what you just ate ... and super cheap, too.

Also, if you like beef with lemongrass, I like it at Kim Phung. That's on North Lamar just south of 183. It's one of the older Vietnamese places in Austin, which could be good or bad depending on how you look at it...

I agree with Hao Hao not being very good as well.

The one I like is called Tan My Restaurant (formerly Tan Tan). Excellent portions, food and nice people.
