I'm hopefully going to be starting graduate school in Austin in the fall, and as I'm not familiar with the city, I had some questions. I keep finding apartments with what I'm looking for in the Springdale/Cameron area, but is that a decently safe place? Security is a major concern, but I'm also on a budget - Hyde Park, for instance, is out of the question. Any advice on areas to check out?

What's your budget? What are you looking for? Which school are you going to be in? (So I'll know where on campus your building is likely to be and which side would be more convenient.) Will you have a car or are you going to be relying on public transportation?

All good points that I forgot to mention, thanks. I'd like to find something under about $650, one bedroom (apartment would be best), and I'm looking into the English department. I do have a car, but I'd rather use public transit - I've heard parking near campus is a nightmare!

It can be. My daughter used to commute from Apache Shores (west of town) to UT a year or so ago and she said she allowed at least 15 minutes once she got there to find a parking spot.

You've got a couple of options. One is Craigslist - you can frequently find sublets there that don't turn up on the MLS.

On the MLS, several pop up within 3 miles of UT (closer than the area you mention above). There are actually several in Hyde Park (north Hyde Park, 51st and north), several right down by UT. There's apartments, condos, duplexes, garage apartments, all within your price range (some WELL within your price range), all in areas that I think you'd feel safe in and some an easy walk to UT.

Oh, that sounds great, thanks! I'm really new to all this - I'd lived where I am now for two years before getting out of the dorms, so I knew the area and didn't have to search around online too much. I tried pulling up MLS, but kept just finding homes for sale; is there a specific site for rentals?

I did just now, and I'm having kind of a hard time pulling up Hyde Park places, but I'll definitely play around with it and see what I can't figure out. Thanks!

No problem. If you need any assistance getting the Hyde Park ones to come up, let me know - they should be in there as that's drawn from the MLS, but maybe something's not working correctly.

UT has apartments. Considered them? They have a waiting list..but if you apply now you should get one by fall.

I did look into that, but I have a dog - he's my one absolute deal-breaker. I can handle small square footage, a commute, etc., but the dog's got to come with. Thanks for the suggestion, though, I appreciate it!
