What program would you recommend for completing the coursework required to become an agent? Would you recommend online courses? Can you explain the sponsorship requirement? How long is the sponsorship required? How defined is that relationship? Other tips, thoughts about joining the industry - such as websites / forums / books to read. Thanks in advance.

Call Austin Institute of Real Estate and they'll fix you up and let you know what you need to do. Don't do classes online. You'll miss out on the conversations and other dialogs that you can't get online.

I agree with Austinsteve about the online classes. While they may be more cost effective and easier to do schedule-wise, there is so much to be gained form an active dialog between students and teachers. Not to mention the networking contacts you can make.
I was a RE appraiser for 8 years in Tennessee and I LOVED attending the classes/seminars and being exposed to all those students/professionals!

I now have a totally different career, but still try to attend any class or seminar in my field I can fit in.

I'll also add that it's a really smart idea to take the test prep course in addition to the required courses. 50% of test takers fail the real estate exam the first try. Most get tripped up on the math portion (which is 9th grade math) and the legal questions. The test prep course is well worth the cost.

Thanks for all the feedback. You mention the Austin Institute of Real Estate - is there much of a difference b/n them or ACC or any other program?

Well, I'm biased and have never taken a class from anywhere else. But from what I've heard others say, they are the best in Austin. I took all my initial classes there in 1990.

The owners are terrific and very knowledgeable. You won't regret going there.
