Okay, have to ask ... where is the best barbecue in Austin/Travis County? Where can I just "wild out" and tear into some good BBQ brisket and ribs?

Has to be Austin/Travis County? Then Sam's is a good place to start. Iron Works, too. Park House on 12th just east of Lamar.

LOL, you are really getting ready for this move! Barbeque is extremely personal for many people here so be prepared to hear lots of opinions. With the departure of John Mueller BBQ on Manor Rd, my personal feeling is that you pretty much have to leave the city to get really good cue. Blacks, Smitty's and Kruez Market in Lockhart; Louis Mueller in Taylor; Cooper's in Llano; and (though I'm not a huge fan) the Saltlick in Driftwood are the holy sextinity for most people.

Here in town, I like Green Mesquite for smoked turkey; Hoover's for ribs; Ruby's for chicken and chopped beef; Rudy's is okay for brisket; Stubbs is okay; Sam's (E 12th) for mutton (yeah, you heard me).

Haha, geoquiz, you're right ... I'm just fed up with Los Angeles!! A person can't breathe here, literally and figuratively. I guess this is my means of escapism today, but in all honestly, I'm looking forward to moving to Austin soon.

@TXhorselady: No ma'am, now that I think about it ... if the BBQ is right, then anywhere in Central Texas is doable for me! Even if I have to make it a weekend thing and take a drive somewhere!

Yeah, that was the problem, the limitation to Austin/Travis County.

I'm not so much for Lockhart BBQ - find it overrated - but will keep driving on down to Luling for City Market cue. If I'm in Taylor, I'll go to Taylor Cafe over Louis Mueller's.

Cooper's in Llano is required.

I'm a Salt Lick fan (the original), even used to send Salt Lick care packages to my son when he was stranded up in NYC with no good cue to be found.

I drive through Luling for work once in awhile, so it must be City Market that I smell mixed in with the town's distinctive aroma (creosote and sulfur)... anything that smells that good despite the oilfield must be tasty so I'll be stopping next time. Thanks THL!

My pleasure. I still remember when someone introduced me to City Market, and feel the need to pass it on.

Save yourself some time, just head out to your local Rudy's! I had all sorts of BBQ / brisket around the Austin / Burnet area and to me, RUDYs fits perfect and the best thing about it, you don't have to drive out to far to get it!
I have not had any brisket better then theirs yet!

You know, "Operation Brisket" should be about finding off-the-radar BBQ joints that are really good... every thread mentions places like Salt Lick, Rudy's, IronWorks, County Line, all the Lockhart places, etc. How about some love for the B-list or undiscovered BBQ joints? For example, there is a little place just about a half a mile past the County Line on the Hill (Bee Caves Rd). I've been to the County line many times, but never tried the little place up the road... has anyone here tried it, or even remember what it is called?
