New to the forum here and lots of good info. I was wondering if I can get input from people who has lived in both cities. I currently live in Frisco, just north of Dallas. It seems like Austin's cost of living is slightly higher than Dallas'. Seems that way as far as home prices, but not sure about other living expenses. Thanks.

Well, let's see what I can remember off the top of my head...

If you actually end up in Austin and are using Austin Energy for your electric service, they are dirt cheap compared to what I paid in Dallas...it was shocking when we got down here, we thought the first bill was wrong, it was so low...then when we moved out to Round Rock, we really felt like we were getting ripped off by Reliant...

Groceries were actually cheaper at HEB in Austin than they are at Wal-mart (at least in my experience, and in the areas I lived while I was in the Austin ares, those were our only real choices, Alberstons has left the market, Kroger left before I ever got there, Tom Thumb doesn't have any stores in Austin, but their Safeway brothers are here-Randall's)...

My auto insurance was less expensive in Austin (but only by $150 a year)...

I can't help you with property taxes, as I never actually owned anything in Austin...

Anything else you are looking for in particular?

You'll find that overall cost of living is about the same. Property is more expensive in Austin but insurance and some other services are cheaper so it balances out.

All good points. I think the biggest expense difference in my case will be the property tax as the home price is higher and property tax is slightly higher too. Good to hear that insurance, utilities and groceries are somewhat comparable or even lower. Utilities can definitely make a difference especially in the sizzling summer months.
