I just moved down to SW Austin. I love it down here. We used to live in North Austin. People knock it all the time, but it is so much closer to the city and has such an Austin feel.

If you are considering RR or Cedar Park, move to SW Austin, it's sooooooo much better.

Who knocks it?? SW Austin is the greatest. The only downside to it, is the fact that the new Chuy's is the only restaurant they've built that is worth going to. Oh, and Maudie's and Galaxy Cafe are ok. People rave about Flores but I don't see it.

Anyway - my only complaint would be that there should be more local Austin restaurants down here, like Kirby Lane and Magnolia, Trudys, and Manga Pizza. But the genius thing is that Lamar and Congress (and Barton Springs) are so close that it doesn't really matter.

I have lived in NW AUstin and really liked it there. SW Austin would not, imho, be great for singles...it is very heavily weighted to young families. NW (close in NW - Mopac/183 area) seemed more of a variety.

As for restaurants in SW Austin, things are improving.
  • Cypress Grill (near MoPac/Wm Cannon) has been there for a long time and is really, really good (also, imho ). Best coffee (maybe Galaxy has better...)
  • Mangeris Pizza (Slaughter/Excarpment) is a locally owned place and is also very good with fast delivery, too.
  • Giss' on Wm Cannon/Escarpemt is hit or miss, but can be very good.
  • Evangeline Cafe on Brodie/Davis area is also quite good, if you like cajun.
  • Waterloo, also on Slaughter/Escarpment, is great for kids and makes a very good breakfast. Great playscape.

Default I miss it, too!

We moved away a year ago and I'm still beating myself up for it! We lived off Beckett, in Western Oaks. I loved the area b/c it was full of trees and walking trails, close to downtown and Whole Foods, we didn't have to get on a freeway to do our daily activities (grocery, gym, post office, etc.) AND we rarely had to use 35.

Wow... I miss it.

We know you do
NW, N, NE, S, SW, SE, W, Central Austin all have great things and not so great things. The important thing is for you to be happy where you are.

That's a good point. SW Austin isn't for people who work north. I live SW and commute NW and I wouldn't do it again if I had to choose where to live over again. However, if you work downtown or central, SW Austin is still a better commute to those areas than North-to-South, IMHO.

My husband and I work North and love SW Austin so much, we're both looking for jobs in the area. Our kids love the schools and it has a great family suburban feel to it.
