Pronouncing "Guadalupe" in Austin or San Marcos. (Houston: house, school)

Hey, hey....let's not get testy. I happen to be one of those "foreigners" from Alabama. Been here a year and love living in Texas. When we first moved here our realtor gave us a crash course in street name/city pronunciations. We try really hard to prounouce them they way they are pronounced here so we won't stick out as one of those "foreigners" as you call us......

incidentally, Jobert is pronounced "jabbit". Seriously though, Schlumberger Rd. is pronounced "schlum-ber-zjay" (au francais). Pedernales = "peddernallus" Bowie = "booey" etc. People say weird things all over the country - up north creeks are called "cricks"

Off topic again, but back to HEB pronunciation, my family and I pronounce Central Market as "Gucci-Bee", the HEB at Hancock Plaza as the "Wanna-Bee" and the HEB at Burnet/Koenig as the "Sleazy-Bee."

Inversely, Target in a good part of town is pronounce "Tar-zjay" (again au francais) and the bad part of town they're called "Targhetto"

I realize this is an old thread, but I just wanted to throw in my two cents. Growing up in Houston and having a husband that went to UT-Austin and a brother at Southwest Texas (now Texas State) in San Marcos...we know it like this:

The street in Austin is gwada-loop.
The river is gwada-loop-ay.

That seems to not have changed since our move to San Antonio...but like hearing about the sweet tea phenomenon in Texas, it's as if I've lived somewhere else entirely my whole life when I hear the river pronounced like the street. It's just weird to me. Reminds me of San Felipe Rd. in Houston. Out-of-Towners and newbies INSIST that it's "San Feh-LEEP-ay" but...no...it's "San Fill-uh-PEE".

Just be glad 'we' don't have to deal with Ponce de Leon on a daily basis(busy drag in Atlanta=all SORTS of pronunciations ).

I still get the Mueller, Miller, Muller, Mew-luhr conversation each time the ACA bike ride goes out there. Two Austin 'natives' don't even agree on the pronunciation.

Personally, I just read the words like they are meant to be said according to a dictionary or native language.

Mueller != Miller I don't care if you can't say your own name correctly.
