Help! I've just been advised I'll be relocating to Austin November 1st and needless to say the tight timeline has me a bit stressed. I've done a bit of research online but with limited time I'm hoping to rely on the expertise of this community which helped me tremendously when I moved to Atlanta a decade ago.

I'm a 33 yo single male with no kids so my first thought was to look downtown as I have no reason to be in the burbs, but if you have any other suggestions I'm certainly open. I'd like to keep the rent below $2500/mo., which limits me to a 1 br in the places I've looked at. While I'd like a 2 br, realize there's a trade off for location.

Realizing that I'll be close to UT, I understand that I may have some students living there, but I'm not looking to be the oldest guy in the building. Hoping to price out of some of those concerns.

Here's where I'm thinking so far:

DOWNTOWN APARTMENTS
Northshore
Ashton
AMLI
Whitley
Windsor on the Lake

Again, appreciate any/all help you can give!

maybe look more south of the river (depends on where you are working). Closer to zilker etc. I think the buildings are older so rents will be less. Plus you will be closer to the amenities that the slightly older crowd likes like good non chain restaurants, the music festivals etc.

Get a locator! Apartment locators are legit in Austin, free to you and are a HUGE help when moving on a tight timeline.

You haven't mentioned what part of town work is located in or whether commute time affects quality of life more than your residence. Some folks want nothing to do with living anywhere near downtown even if their job was there. Others want to live closer to work to avoid commutes even if it means living in hamster-style housing. So what kind of constraints are you placing on your residential location or features of your living quarters?

With that budget you can live a lot of places in the city. But typical questions: where is work? Interests? Anything else super important to you?

It definitely depends on where you work, but if it's downtown or south of the river, it sounds like a lot of the new apartment blocks on South Lamar would be a good fit. If your work is north of the river, I'd look into the new stuff along Burnet. With your budget, you're really not limited at all.

Also West Austin is very nice, great Terrain. Sounds like a good opportunity.

Coming from Atlanta will be an adjustment as it's a whole different class of city with all the big city amenities. But Austin is getting there and Austin is super fun. Lot's of outdoorsy things, music and interesting people. very down to earth. Say goodbye to mass transit, and professional sports. Welcome great food, a river and live music!

I was in a similar situation to you when I moved here, I lived by Zilker and it worked out well. Consider renting a condo from an owner, and try to get into a building with concrete construction instead of stick built, there are a lot of stick built buildings that have fancy brick facades but will be flimsy and loud on the inside. Avoid the burbs, you will be bored.
