Someone on this site a while back mentioned putting out water for birds. I ran with that this year and put a couple of dishes of water on my porch. I'm not sure who said that, but thanks. It's been one of the coolest things I've done in a long time.

You could sit there and watch it all day. We have a few Bluejays come around, a male and female cardinal, doves, finches, and other ones I don't know the name of. The feral cats like it, the squirrels also. I've seen a lizard drink the water, and I've seen a few different kind of wasp looking things use it.

Thanks for the great idea City Data.

Just make sure you change the water/keep it fresh so mosquitoes don't make it a hatchery .

Thanks for posting this OP.

Watching those critters drinking & interacting around a bowl of fresh water on a hot summer day is like watching little kids out playing & running around when the sprinklers are on.

The feral cats are probably killing as many birds as you help with the water

One of my neighbors called animal control s couple weeks ago. I haven't seen the cats in more than a week and I use to see them every day.

I also put out water for the critters. Amazing how many use the bowl! I do clean the bowl every three days and usually have to top off the water level daily.

Beware that it can attract unwelcome nature as well. We had a bird bath and feeder and used to love watching the birds. Well, apparently birds are one of a rattlesnake's favorite foods. After we had the 5th rattlesnake removed from our yard, we decided that we didn't like watching the birds that much. Once we got rid of the birds, the snake problem resolved.

I had a bird bath on the ground during the summer of 2011, when it was SO hot and dry for so long. During that summer, I was very pleased to have a fox who would climb/jump over my fence every afternoon, get a drink, then go back over the fence. It was a short trip, he/she never bothered any other visiters to the water, and it might have saved the life of that fox during that very difficult summer.
