I know someone had posted earlier about finding a Montessori school. I was reading that not all schools are really Montessori, anyone can use that name... so I found a list of the "real" schools in Austin. I thought this was helpful. I also didn't realize that they took the summer off with the exception of the Children's School.

I also wanted to let the pp know that you can look up the montessori school's past records with the state. DFPS - Search Texas Child Care

It's always a good idea to check and see what kinds of violations have occured in the past.

I was absolutely horrified to see a recent violation at Austin Children's Montessori school after several people raved about them. You just never know!!

Default Montessori schools in north Austin

Does anyone have a good Montessori school recommendation up north ( Arboretum- 360-riverplace)?

I heard Austin Montessori takes children from 18 mos... Is that not too young? I believe they also don thave afterschool care, which means we have to pick the child from school and drop them bac at another daycare?

Anyone put their kids at such a young age and found that to be great?

thanks

Don't foget Austin Montessori School. All of the guides are AMI certified. The school itself is 40 years old and the founder is considered on of today's leaders in Montessori education.

They do take children from 18 mos, but only at the south campus on Jones Road. The north location, on Great Northern, by Far West and Mopac, takes children from 2 1/2-9 and they do offer after-school care until 5:30.

What qualifications do they require to be considered a "real" Montessori center?
My children both attend International Montessori House of Children (Far West location). When I enrolled them, I was told that the school was AMI certified and all but two of their teachers are also AMI certified.

To be considered a "Rreal" the school must be certified by either Association Montessori Internationale or American Montessori Society and ALL of your guides must be certified through the training these associations offer as well.

I can tell you that we have had a HORRIBLE experience with Hawthorne Montessori on Kramer Ln.

We pulled our daughter out and there have been at least 3 other families do the same within the past 5 weeks.

Always ask to speak with former parents from the school and ask them as many questions as you can about the school.

The teachers are only one aspect of any program. Anyone can claim to believe in the Montessori Method, to get your check, but actually delivering it is something all together.

Ask to observe any school you are considering both before you enroll and then again several times throughout the year.

Also, look at staff turn over. If it is high, {usually need to talk to parents and staff verses a director} run quickly to the exit. It signals a major problem with the school!

Go visit Arbor Montessori on Jollyville near the Arboretum. They are new, so I believe they have more space than some of the other schools. They are a off-shoot of North Austin Montessori. I believe they take the Montessori concepts seriously...i.e. is not just a school "named" Montessori. They have early drop off and after school care, so your child could be there all day if you needed.
