Hi,

i'm moving to Austin in feb, so i've been looking on craigslist for an apt.
I will be working in DT, near the Austin city hall, and i'd like to bike to work, so living far away is not an option.

seems like the only thing i can find, (1 BR apt, at under 1300$/mo) is near south lamar street, or so called 78704 zip code area. Central downtown is too pricey, or the apartments are too small.

Is there better alternatives?

600 sq ft runs around 1300$/mo in 78704 area, is that a reasonable price?

78702
78704
78703 (parts of)
78705 and,
if you can find one 78701

All offer the ability to walk/bike to work. But it will all be on the pricier side. The good news, you will not need a car.

All the apartments will be expensive. I would seek out small older units where you're more likely to find a deal rather than the big complexes.

Definitely work with an apartment finder. Trying to locate a place to live online, particularly via craigslist, will give you few worthwhile results. If you're not particular about aging and dated apartments and duplexes, there are still a lot of smaller complexes north and south of the lake which will be less expensive --- but you're unlikely to find them online. There are also guest houses and garage apartments in some of the historic centrally located neighborhoods, but again you'll be in the best position to find one of those in person.

Check out 78741 / East Riverside. Connected to downtown by the hike and bike trail. Up and coming area with a lot of new construction. It's "caddy-corner" to downtown, so it's not adjacent like the zips listed above.

Hyde park is going to offer you the most rental options in the best neighborhood for the money IMO. A ton of smaller complexes around red river, Duval, speedway areas north of campus decending in price from say 34th thru 51st.... Slighty older, but easy biking to your work and much less expensive...

after your msg, I found this "AMLI eastside", which is probably my favourite so far. Thanks!

look I think you are paying to way to much to live close to Downtown.

if you have a car that you can occasionally use for shopping but like to Bike to Work.

I would say move to 78759 or 78750 much more affordable. Bike to a Park And ride. Put your Bike on the Bus and get close to your job. 78704 has very high density and that suggest big prices.

The OP will be working in DT so the commute from 78704 will be a breeze compared to the two zips you mentioned. 78704 doesn't have very high density as most of the land area is dedicated single family homes and most of the commercial has surface level parking (though this is changing slowly).
