So I made it down here to check out the area. I really like Austin but I notice that there are a lot of tolls. I avoided the tolls this weekend but how does the tolls work? Do you just ride through them and they bill you later or do you have to pay right then and there?

They are cashless. They will bill you based on your license plate. If you are driving a rental, the rental car company will forward the bill or will back charge the credit card used to rent the car. If you have out of state plates they have no way to track you or so we were told when we first moved here.

We have TX Tags for our cars, we pay a reduced fee and it bills to our prepaid account automatically. When the account gets low it automatically charges $20 (my husband set it up, I am not sure if you can add more, less etc. we just do ours in $20 increments)

yes they charge you more if the sticker is empty when a charge goes through> I also think they charge you more if you don't have a sticker.

Only on one side of town. Pretty limited considering the area as a whole.

For now.

The link below gives you all the information that you'll need for each toll road. You can navigate to Toll Roads in Texas and choose the specific Austin toll road.

The north side is all tolls. It's horrible. The south doesn't have any - they don't want to offend the yuppies down there.

Ok I will check out the link Mark. Thanks. I haven't been south yet but when we came we were in the Round Rock/Pflugerville area. I will be taking 45 back and forth to work so I will invest in a toll sticker.

Historically speaking, this is just soooo wrong .
