I'm establishing service and picking out a trash can- wow, Austin really encourages recycling! What size do you have?

Trash Cart Size Monthly Rates
21-gallon $12.75*
32-gallon $13.50*
64-gallon $18.75*
96-gallon $30.95*

32 here; just heard about the 21 recently (it's new this year I think). I'll probably switch even though the 32-21 discount is so minor.

I don't know how some households are producing 96 gallons of garbage every week. Diapers? Lots of pizza boxes and take-out containers?

We have the 32 and will probably stay there...some weeks (parties or other events) you end up needing a bit more room. We are a family of 4 with at least on in diapers (disposable) over the last 5 years, and have never had an issue with the 32. The single stream recycling takes a huge load of the trash can.

32-gallon $13.50 I am trying to get rid of clutter and the 32 is very handy for filling it up when the de-cluttering bug bites.

I had the smallest size and found it was a nuisance even though I was a one-person household. If the lid of the trash can does not close tightly you will be charged extra on your bill. The expectation is that you will buy stickers and place the extra trash in a garbage bag, place the sticker on it, and haul that to the curb too. After a while I would get so aggravated by trash that did not fit in this tiny container that I would take it with me when I visited friends who lived in an apartment. Once I was there I would take out their trash and toss mine out along with theirs. The whole thing was silly and I vowed that I would never have a tiny trash can again. I cannot live trying to buy only things that will fit in the stupid garbage can. I also didn't enjoy cutting things up into tiny pieces so that they fit in the can.

We'll be dropping from the 64 to the 32 after our garage sale at the end of the month. Only two of us plus the pup; but, we have plenty of empty space in the bin each week. I can't tell you how many neighbors have TWO 64s and some have two recycling bins! That's a lot of consumables and packaging moving through the system .

I'm remembering my college days when our family got the morning and afternoon newspaper and I got the Wall Street Journal for school. Now THAT was some recycling opportunity! Now, we can fill a good portion of the bin with the catalogs we receive DAILY. I need to go into the printing business!

The 21 gallon!! And that's with five people, three cats, and a dog!!
It does take work and we have to compost our food scraps but I like the discipline. We have one big recycling container and fill it every two weeks.

Thank you for making me think about this. I just downgraded to the 32 gallon cart.

http://austintexas.gov/department/re...ial-rates-fees

FYI you save only $0.75 /month going to the smallest trash cart size over the 32 gallon size.

Trash Cart Size Monthly Rates
21-gallon $12.75*
32-gallon $13.50*
64-gallon $18.75*
96-gallon $30.95*
*Includes base fee of $8.75

If you switch to a larger trash cart, you will be charged a $15 one-time upgrade fee. You may downsize to a smaller cart at no charge. To change your trash cart size, call 512-494-9400.

But why did you drive yourself crazy instead of just trading up to the next bigger size?

It's easy to do. And the upgrade fee can be charged to your Mental Health account.

How inconvenient can it be?

It is not that big of a deal to put an extra trash bag out next to the cart with a sticker on it for the extra fee. I often do it around Xmas time. No big deal!
