My Mom is her visiting and would like to know where we can go out for some good prime rib in Austin? Preferably SW Austin.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks, CptnRn

The Belmont (downtown) used to have a prime rib special on Thursdays, and it was really good... but they closed. I know that doesn't help at all.

But if you find a place let me know. It's one of those things that is still a little hard to find in Austin's restaurant scene.

Slightly off topic but I was underwhelmed by the beef offerings in the greater Austin area.

Captn, sorry but you will not find a prime cut Angus bone-in prime rib. Here's what I do, buy a 7-8 pound standing rib roast and cook as follows:

1. bring meat to room temp
2. coat with oil, doesn't matter what kind
3. in a heavy pan, roast at 450 for 15 minutes. no longer
4. now set the oven temp to 350 without taking it out or even looking at it
5. Now, the most important step, at about 1 hour and 15 minutes stick a digital thermometer into the center and if it reads 110 degress, take it out, cover with foil and let rest for 30-60minutes, it will still cook. Perfect medium rare prime rib. IMPORTANT: do not over cook, it will taste like shoe leather.
the center should read no higher than 120 ever.

Good luck, and yorkshire pudding is a delight also.

The only two places I know are north - Houston's and Cool River. Flemings has it on Sunday but I'm sure it's pricey!

Hard to beat Perry's Steakhouse downtown. Prime Rib is really good, but their signature pork chops might be even better.

Houston's has been closed for quite some time, I believe.

There is no good place in austin to get a good prime rib. I had one once at shoreline grill, but the next two times were bad. Every other place has been terrible

As someone below posted you have to make it yourself. I will have to disagree with the recipe a bit. You definitely need a minimum of 3 ribs in the rack. 7-8 will be a LOT of meat. We usually get our prime rib from central market. But have gotten them from costco too (standing rib roast). The meat isnt as good as Im used to up north, but pretty good.

I roast mine at a much lower temperature - 225 or 250

Take it out at 125- 130 for medium rare. Cover with foil and it will continue to cook another 5-10 degrees depending on how you cover it. Foil will be 5 degrees. Ive done it before in a le creuset dutch oven (top off) and it will heat up an extra 10 degrees.

Definitely use a digital thermometer.
