My family and I are considering moving and are torn between Austin, TX and Nashville, TN. I love playing guitar, I'm not looking to make a living at it but I do want to live someplace that has bars where I can occassionally play. Nashville has Music Row which is good for the unknown musician to go and play once in a while; does Austin have anything like that? Can anyone think of any other cities that are good for a hobby guitarist to get a chance to play once in a while. I've done the band thing and the solos, I'm just a musician who can't put down his guitar, that's why I'd prefer a city where I can sometimes play and other times just listen. Would prefer a mild climate (or at least ittle snow and low humidity) and obviously low crime rate is important.

Well, Austin has more Live Music Venues per Capita than any place in the Nation ...
But probably more Live Musicians too ...
PLENTY of places ... getting on stage at one may take a little work, but doable

It snows for about an hour and half per year here, doesn't really stick, vanishes pretty quickly

I gets hot, but it's not really humid, it's actually quite dry

There are plenty of areas with little to no crime

Both Austin and Nashville are loaded with great musicians that nobody has ever heard of, or ever will. This article sums up the travails of an aspiring professional musician in Austin (love the Luv Doc articles in the Chronicle).

If you're just a music hobbyist, there are probably several open mike and jam nights around town. You might take a look at do512.com for some of those.

I would say that there are dozens of live music strips in the city and you will have very few obstacles to getting on stage. But honestly, I would say that you would have everything you would want in Nashville.

Default thanks for the info

I'm glad to hear there are some places where I can still occassionally play. I agree the two cities are similar, Nashville is showing a higher violent crime rate which concerns me, humidity is comparable. Since my wiofe has allergies we need a somewhat drier climate and it looks like Austin gets a little more sun than Nashville. How are the flash floods in Austin, are they often and are they as hazardous as they sound? Do homes in Austin flood every year because of the flash floods?
