When is the best time to avoid the traffic jams early in the morning and evenings?

I'll be traveling to Driftwood a few times a week from North Austin (Lakeline area).

I was thinking if I head south around 6am, I'll miss a good bit of the super thick traffic, and then I won't head back up North until about 10am.

If I go in the evenings I'm wondering if after 7pm would be best?

I do have a few back roads that I can take that run from 360 to Lake Austin, but its past Barton Springs area that I'm back-road-less.

6am is your best bet!
7pm in the afternoon, you should also be fine during the week going back home.
I think you got it down (the schedule that is)

You could also try 620 to Hwy 71, its almost the same distance and probably has less traffic.

Default Austin traffic heading from south to north in the morning?

I just accepted a job in Austin and I'm moving there from Jupiter, Florida in early January. I'm wondering about the traffic on the Mopac heading north during the morning commute and heading south during the afternoon commute. The office I'll be working it is located approximately around the intersection of Mopac and 183 and the apartment I'll be living at is located in Hyde Park on 38th Street. What's it like heading north from 38th Street to Mopac & 183 around 7-8 am? And coming back around 5-630 pm?

Also, would the traffic be any better on surface streets such as Lamar Blvd or Burnet Road?

Thanks.

NB from there won't be anything to speak of. Coming home might be a bit slower, but won't be terrible.

Agree that it needs to be before 7. Actually 7am from Lakeline is a little too late. 6:35am would be the latest to ensure that you won't see much of a slowdown. The 183/Mopac area starts to back up a lot at about 6:50am pretty consistently. The nice thing is that it should be light until late January when the colleges start back up.

And I just realized I was responding to an Op from 2 years ago with a totally different question. Oh well, it's still true.

Except now that the Mopac construction has begun, the evening drive is a crap shoot for the next couple of years.
