Hello everyone. I am a single woman in her early 30's considering a move from the PNW (Seattle suburbs). Everyone I meet (and I do mean EVERYONE), loves Austin, however, when I went to visit, I went into a bit of mountain withdrawl. I love to hike and camp, and not really into the nightlife scene. I loved the hot weather though! Would Austin be a place for me? Other places I am also considering include Portland, Tucson, Albuquerque and Denver/Boulder. My job is extremely flexible, I can essentially live anywhere, so I'm not concerned about that aspect.

I'd go for Denver. The winters aren't too harsh and the summers are beautiful

Colorado would be my suggestion. While there are places to camp and hike here, the summers (Mid-May through Sept) are brutal. Right now it has been over 100 degrees for over a week. Unless you are really into that sort of thing, I'd stay further north.

If you love to hike and camp, I think you would find endless variety in Denver/Boulder and would be sorely disappointed in Austin. It's not that there's nowhere to hike, but you're right that we don't have mountains like the other places and our offerings are very sparse compared to someplace like Denver/Boulder and the nearby offerings at national and state parks within easy driving distance.

If I wasn't tied to Austin for family reasons, I'd pick Colorado. Lovely place and great for outdoor activities. Albuquerque and Tuscon might have mountains, but there's not much else about the area to love, IMO. I'd pick Austin over those two.

Colorado. The dearth of public lands in Texas will be a big deal for anyone that likes to hike or camp. Our small state parks aren't very scenic and get a bit monotonous. Big Bend is really the only park that compares to anything in the West but it's far away and almost unusable in the summers.

How about Austin 9 months out of the year and Boulder in the summer - rent your home in Austin and rent in Boulder from a student leaving for the summer...

Ditto about private lands. My brother who is an avid hiker moved to Colorado because of the lack of public access here in Texas. It is hard to even stick your feet in a stream here as you will either pay a fee to enter or be considered a tresspasser. Personally, I would pick Boulder or Denver if I had the means to live there.
