Without a predator besides the grill of a car, they will breed every year.

I've definitely noticed a decline. I wonder if it was the bad freeze we had.

With the drought, you'd figure there would be tons of deer in the neighborhoods eating landscaping. Usually there is...

Definitely abating in the areas that I frequent. I haven't seen a deer in those areas for months. It's probably mostly related to the drought, could be other factors too - not sure. But the numbers are definitely down where I usually see them.

The drought could have killed them off. When my family was trying to increase the deer population on our lease, we learned from an ag extension agent that pregnant does will spontaneously abort if there's not enough forage. A few years of this will definitely decrease the population.

I worry about transmissible spongiform encephalopathy. "Chronic wasting disease". The state hasn't allowed import of animals from the affected areas of the nation for some years now and it would be virtually impossible for migratory patterns to carry it here, but I wouldn't bet that there are no cracks for something to slip through. It's a real reach to think that it's something like that rather than, for example, stress from feral pigs combined with miserable drought conditions - but it's still something I worry about.

Yep, Avery Ranch has plenty; although, they aren't too happy with the disturbance going on at Pearson Place.
