Really like the gyros from the Brodie location. Best I've found since leaving California. Didn't like much of the rest of the stuff on their menu. They have sort of a buffet arrangement (if you like; you can order the gyros alone) where you can get several things at once. I really only liked the gyros on the plate.

They have a Chinese place that's not too bad several doors down and I get some pineapple fried rice from there and a gyro. I keep half the rice for later. Perfect!

I just saw this in the Statesman:

Ararat, the popular Middle Eastern restaurant that had closed in North Central Austin, is reopening this weekend in East Austin. The restaurant will celebrate its reopening at 6 p.m. Saturday at Hot Mama's on 2401 E. Sixth St., where it will be a part of the coffeehouse, according to a note from restaurant staff. The new partnership should make a lot of Ararat fans happy; they have continued to write and call, asking for any word on a new location.

It isn't really a restaurant, but has anyone tried Phoenicia? Great bread . We have gone there for lunch once or twice, and really liked it, but it is take out only (at least at their south location)....don't know about authenticity, but the owners are from Lebanon.

My co-worker is related to the founders (she is a niece, I think?) and she worked there through part of college. Apparently, people come from all over the state to get stuff there, but I can't verify that myself .

There is a new Mediterranean Buffet on Wm Cannon/Beckett called DeGrassi's, but I have not been there.
