For any of you Austin locals...have you had any good/back luck with particular moving companies? I have to spend all day tomorrow finding a mover.

also, we are looking for a place that might offer cageless dog boarding for our dog while we are in the middle of our move. We may be in temporary housing for a few days/weeks and want to make sure our doggie is comfortable. I found a place called Hip Hounds in Round Rock and we will try them out. Does anyone know of any others? Our dog freaks out being in a cage or kennel, so traditional boarding places are out for us. I was encouraged to at least find one in Austin, there are none in Phoenix!

Findpetcare dot com has an extensive listing of dog boarding facilities for the Austin area.

Are you looking in Austin because you can't find a place in Phoenix or do you prefer to have a boarder in Austin? I'm asking because there are options for you in the Phoenix area. I think even PetSmart has a boarding facility that is not the traditional crate/kennel. I take it you do not have a friend/relative who would be willing to take care of your dog while you're in transition? What kind of dog do you have? Is your dog socialized to be around other dogs without fighting?

I used www.upack.com. They drop off a trailer, you load it, and they pick it up and drive it to your destination.
To load the truck I used some guys I found on www.emove.com. You can just put in your zipcode, then date you need, and it will show you a bunch of people all willing to help. The best part is that all the helpers have dozens of reviews, so you can read all about them before you hire them. I've used www.emove.com twice now, once when we loaded up in Cailfornia, and again when we unloaded in Texas.

Lehi,

We need to have the boarder be in Austin. We want to make our final road trip to Austin with our 2 tiny kids without the dog in the car, so my husband is driving one car to Austin with our dog, and then leaving her at the boarder's and he's flying back and then the rest of us will all drive there together.

We used to use Polly's Paws in Phoenix, but she is no longer doing in-home boarding, and the only other place we found was a pet resort in Rio Verde but they didn't return our calls the last time we tried to use them!

Neil/Spookmeister, thanks for the tips on the movers and boarders as well, I will check them out!

Ok then. Can't help you with cageless boarders in Austin. Just didn't want people thinking there are "none in Phoenix". There are several. Hope you find what you need.

Lehi, it might be a good idea to post those places somewhere in the Phoenix forum. Literally, we looked around for 3 years (called traditional kennels, searched online, you name it) and never found a place other than Polly's Paws, which was run out of her home and not ideal as she could only take limited dogs.

I thought maybe there were no cageless facilities due to the heat; of the 4 cities we've lived in with our dog it was the only place we couldn't readily find a facility for her.

Nobody in the Phoenix forum is asking about cageless boarding facilities. I only posted in this forum because I didn't know whether you were looking for a facility in Austin because you had given up on finding one in Phoenix or what the case was. I thought maybe I could help. I'll move along now.

I don't know anything about the boarding, but can you drive the route, yourself (you and hubby)? When I moved from Indiana to California, I rented the largest U-haul they had...one way rental. I got it loaded, my brother drove the u-haul and I drove my car. It was a long drive...over 2500 miles. We got it here, unloaded it and dropped it off at a u-haul place. Phoenix to Texas would be a much shorter drive. Have you thought about making the drive, yourself? That would eliminate the need for scrambling around to find movers. I have heard so much negative stuff about movers that I am going to move myself the second time, too. Scared of movers.

We had a terrible moving experience last time also, Texasdreamin...and we are horrified of having to do it again. But we have more stuff than the largest U-Haul will hold, unfortunately!

I am impressed that you survived an IN to CA move with a UHaul...we did Phoenix to San Francisco about 6 years ago and that was pretty bad all on its own!!
