If by barber shop you mean traditional barber shop with a bunch of men sitting around and talking with some sports on the TV (hair cuts going on in the background). Does not exist in Austin proper from what I've been able to find. I've been missing this atmosphere ever since I left the midwest and in my opinion would be a welcome addition to Austin.

Now I'll be corrected by 100 people telling me that these places do exist. I've done pretty substantial research, so let's see what's out there that matches this:

In praise of barber shops. - (parenthetically speaking) (http://donjoz.posterous.com/in-praise-of-barber-shops - broken link)

I didn't look at everything at that link, but the Wooten Barber Shop is a real barber shop on the Drag.

Floyd's 99 Barbershop is about as close to a "real" barber shop as Austin offers it seems (it's not a style shop). The problem I had when I first got here in Austin last year was trying to locate a barber shop. Found some butcher shops instead. They would ask me "what number?"--what the heck is that about, I wondered. Ahhh, it's the width of the clipper attachment. No scissor cuts?

Then, I found Floyd's 99 in the ArborWalk Shopping Center--Don is great! A little pricey for a barber shop ($19 for cut), but worth it compared to the butcheries.
