I just learned about it from that link, a while ago. I think I recall the mechanism of crickets doing something with their wings, but this was interesting about the cicadas.

I love this sound. I grew up a little north of Austin in the sticks and I vividly remember warm summer nights when we were out in the yard playing hide and seek and the sound of cicadas would consume the air.
