The idiot light came on at 66500 miles indicating that I needed an oil change. I always bring the car in every 10k miles for an oil change. I brought the car in and Audi dealer said that I needed the 70k service. Should I have ignored that light and brought the car in at 70k miles?
What are they doing at the 70k mile service and did you compare that to your maintenance manual?
Better yet, find a private German mechanic/repair shop instead of your dealer to work on the Audi. May or may not be possible if you live in a very rural area tho.

If your light comes on and you fail to do the required service, they can invalidate the warranty, if you are still on one. Regardless of what the manual says for service intervals, the condition of the oil (and other fluids) may indicate that it needs changing sooner. They can verify this by inspecting the oil, even testing it. Premature oil life failure can be caused by extensive stop-go short trips, a lot of idling, dusty roads/nasty air such as with wildfire smoke. When that light comes on you really should change it within 500 miles/two weeks. Depending on the vehicle, that light could mean old oil, low oil level, or low oil pressure.
On the other hand, some dealers do try to rip people off with premature or un-needed services. I have seen that several times with Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge dealers in our area when we had Jeeps.

The dealer just called and said that the oil change light came on because it had been a year since the oil was changed.

In addition to the oil change they rotated and balanced the tires and did a bunch of checks
