I've lived all over, but it's amazing how quickly one can forget what normal city living is like. I was in 4 other major east coast cities this week and it was amazing to see how crime and ghetto culture permeates this city by comparison. People in the other cities can walk around in the downtown areas without fear for their safety or concern over what their children might see. It sure makes you jealous to hear statements like "it's been years since anyone was killed" in the in-town submarkets. It was really nice to go a whole week without seeing people walking around with their pants around their ankles. Hartsfield Airport is certainly a jolt back to reality. The fact that we've let this city reach it's current status is so sad. I will continue to try to fight the degradation of the culture/society here, and I hope everyone else will, too.

I would like to live someplace where you can leave a gym bag in your car without fear of it getting stolen, or even a bike in your backyard. Does anyone know how to go about getting the Open Door Community soup kitchen on Ponce shut down? Those fools have been enabling the homeless on Ponce for way too long.

Maybe if we would help the homeless NOT be homeless by giving some safety nets and support, then you wouldn't have to have a soup kitchen. I agree, Atlanta looked pretty bad to me the last time I was there. But, when the community doesn't take care of ALL the people of the community, things eventually break down and you get poverty and crime. You think crime is bad now...take away the only meal someone has in a day and it will only get worse. When will we stop being so selfish? I don't know. It is sad really.

Yes there is a difference down here. However all or most of the east coast cities are like this. They are ugly, gritty, dank, run down, simply nasty places. In recent times many areas are comming back, but in Atlanta you have a Dynamic where the city is disliked and shunned by it's region. And many would say for very good reason as you can and have seen.

There are many good things here, but many lie outside the city as most people in the area not only never see Atlanta, they actively avoid it. And by people That could mean black well educated as well as international diverse cosmopolitans. Not just the bubbas as some want to believe.

Atlanta is much better than it used to be but it still not very good as a city. It's great as a metro though.

How are we being selfish? What kind of safety nets do you want beyond the welfare state we have today?

While all homeless aren't the same and individual stories vary, I wonder how many people are homeless due to alcohol and/or drug problems? How many have no education? How many are products of single parent homes?

Just remember that while some exceptions exist, people's situations are often a reflection of the choices they make in life, good and bad. It's not "society's fault" and no one is selfish because they aren't homeless while someone else is. It's not a zero sum game.

Please also remember that many people give much of their own personal money voluntarily to help social causes. Just because the money isn't confiscated by government to be redistributed doesn't mean that it's not given.

EDIT: Oh and BTW...being a criminal is a choice. There are poor people who do not commit crimes, and there are rich people who do. It's the character of the individual that decides the choices they make.

Etc etc I wondering what is keeping all these people in such a crime ghetto.. I wonder why over a million people would move here in 10 years... Why ????

I live intown and its not what you make it to be. Do you actually come into town and hang out?? You might be surprised if you spent time in town, lots of rumors and speculation on here but those that spend time intown seem to love it. I can't tell you how many people I meet who want to move intown.

How many violent heckhole cities have an additional 150,000+ people move to them in 10 years...
