Did anyone hear about two new movie studios that are coming to Atlanta? I heard one of them is Paramount.

I've heard rumors of several new studios being built here but haven't seen any real detail on them. I also read several weeks ago that the company that did all the motion capture work for movies like Avatar and Lord of the rings is considering opening a new studio in Atlanta and moving a lot of their operations from LA to here.

I think I originally read this in the AJC but I can't find it on the AJC online for some reason. I did however find an article about it on bizjournals.com:

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/stories/2010/03/22/story5.html?b=1269230400^3056061&page=1

It is a two page story so be sure to click the second page at the bottom to finish reading it. It looks like the company is already Atlanta based but their studio is out in LA and they're now thinking about opening the studio up in Atlanta.

As a resident of Henry co. This is awesome news to me. More jobs will be created, and who knows, we could become the next Hollywood.

Hey, Georgia is cheaper than Hollywood and we aren't about to fall into the ocean like malibu.

Burt Reynolds almost single handedly made Georgia a prime film making place in the 70s. A state agency promoting Georgia as a place to make movies was begun then, but somebody let the ball drop. A major studio is in the Wilmington, NC area and a lot of movie and TV production went there.

It is still fun to see movies filmed in Georgia and spot recognizable features. Saw the movie "Zombieland" this year and embarrased the kids as I kept saying things like "that's Newnan, I think" "Yes, it is Newnan, I saw a Bank of Coweta sign...." "Dad, be quiet!"

The times they are a changing.

Yes there is a studio in Wilmington, NC. No, it's not getting a lot of work.

If you were to somehow find all the crew parking lots for all the productions going on in the ATL right now (4, I think - Vampire Diaries, Drop Dead Divas, Hall Pass and one other) you would see a lot of NC license plates. The work has gone back to ATL.

News of studios being considered is the next step to cementing the industry. New Orleans and Albuquerque both had investors build studios shortly after their incentives proved viable and long lasting. ATL (and the areas around ATL) would be wise to allow a studio complex to be built. As the articles that are linked stated: you build it they will come: catering companies, movie industry suppliers, people.

However, don't be fooled. If you have never worked in the film industry or don't have a whole lot of experience, you won't be making the top money. You will start at the bottom making almost nothing for LONG (14+ hours a day) days. Paying your dues. I just like to point that out to people when they hear that Hollywood may be coming and bringing 'jobs.'
