Council approves Lakewood lease deal

The vote appeared to be a no-brainer for the Atlanta City Council: Approve a multi-million dollar, 50-year lease to rent out the Lakewood Fairgrounds to EUE/Screen Gems and move Atlanta a step closer to Hollywood.
It ultimately was approved 13-0, but not without a fierce battle over the language in a proposed amendment and a spat over council territory.
Joyce Sheperd, who represents the district, fought throughout the day to get an amendment passed that would have required EUE/Screen Gems to guarantee a certain number of jobs for the community. It was a request some council members, plus Mayor Kasim Reed, saw as unreasonable.

I'm glad that the deal is going through. I'm sorry for Councilwoman Sheperd, but tired thought processes like hers need to go by the way of the Dodo. There are plenty of young people at Georgia State University and the AU Center who are fully trained and ready to take advantage of the opportunities that Screen Gems will provide.

Sheperd needs to drink a hot glass of you-know-what, sit down and let saner heads handle this deal. Great for Atlanta!!!

Got to chime in here. See, Screen Gems will actually only provide a few permanent jobs: security, groundskeepers, janitorial staff, administration. Say about 100 jobs (mix of full and part time.) The movie jobs will be paid for and provided by the production companies coming in to make movies, just like they do now. Essentially the Screen Gems/ Lakewood lot would be like a fully furnished office space: you come in, rent the space you need, get phone and lights and access.
That's the way Screen Gems works in Wilmington, NC. Screen Gems has not produced anything in WIlmington since they bought the studio from Carolco back in the late 90's. Also, a lot of people are confusing Screen Gems (part of Sony) and Screen Gems EUE. They are different entities.
Having said all that, I'm happy for Atlanta. Having multiple, purpose built production facilities are a great asset to get more films and TV series to the metro area.
