Is there any real advantage to living in one or the other? We have noticed that real estate is about the same and the schools seem comparable. Sell me one way or the other!

With all things being equal I would say buford, it's a little closer to the city, (not by much only a couple of exits, but that counts if you're considering traffic)and there is more development around buford (mall of georgia area)

I live in Dacula and my sister lives in Buford. Buford is close to Lake Lanier and the gigantic landfill. If you decide on Buford, just be sure not to get close to the landfill (which feeds Lake Lanier.) Buford does have all the things you need - shopping (Mall of Georgia), schools (Buford City schools are better than county), recreation, etc. Dacula is spread over a large area and covers everything from dense subdivisions to rural farm areas. It is not far from Buford on one end and Lawrenceville/Snellville on another. Retail growth has begun in Dacula in all areas. To me, Buford is more of the good ol' boy town and Dacula is more family-oriented. Although, Buford is family-oriented too. There is probably not much difference in the two. You need to check out both and then, if you find a house you like, be very thorough in checking out everything.

Where is the landfill? We are considering Buford off 124/Flowery Branch.
