My husband and I are moving to Atlanta, GA from Charlotte, NC. His office will be in the North Permiter area. We have been looking online at
Alparetta
Acworth
Kennesaw
Woodstock
Suwanee/Buford

Does anybody know the commutes times/traffic in these areas? What about details on the area? Schools? Taxes? Safe areas? Housing options?

We would really appreciate any information && opinnions you can give us.

Rule of thumb. Measure the driving distance from a potential home to the office. Calculate a reasonable drive time (Google maps will do this for you). Double it. Add 30 minutes. That's the minimum amount of time it will take during rush hour.

Well, maybe it's not that bad.

Alpharetta to Perimeter would mean travelling GA 400. That commute is awful. Acworth, Kennesaw or Woodstock to Perimeter means travelling I-75 and what's called the "top-end Perimeter" (I-285 loop along the northern stretch). That commute is awful. Suwanee/Buford to Perimeter means travelling I-85 (or perhaps Buford Highway or Peachtree Industrial) and the top-end Perimeter. That commute is awful.

Do you sense a pattern here? If you are really interested in minimizing your commute, I'd recommend that you look in Roswell, Sandy Springs, Dunwoody or Norcross for whatever you can afford.

Seriously, each of the commutes I mentioned above would probably take an hour or more during the rush. Kennesaw might be less depending on where the house is.

Bill

Could you clarify 'where' in the North Perimeter area the office is located?

ie--the name of the street or closest landmark--such as Perimeter Mall or NorthPoint Mall

Thinking about this some more I want to revise what I said earlier. The commute from Alpharetta to Perimeter could be done in 45 minutes or even less if you're lucky. But many times that stretch of GA 400 turns in to a parking lot. It is one of the most congested expressways in the Atlanta area.

Sunshine,

Unlike North Carolina, our State Legislature is a bunch of immature simpletons who have refused to adequately address our transportation issues in Metro Atlanta--which is why there is nearly a unanimous consensus on this thread that no matter which option you choose, your hubby will have a bad commute.

Please tell us a little about yourself, your family, and what your price range is for a home and we'll try to fill in the gaps for you in suggesting a comfortable and convenient place for your family.

Commute between Alpharetta and Perimeter is totally dependent on time of the day. Before 7:00AM it takes me 15 - 20 mins from Exit 11 to North Springs Marta Station. Riding back before 6 PM is also pain free ( < 25-30 mins).

It used to be very bad but since last 8 months (that when I moved to Alpharetta), I have never experienced horrible hours as "bill" stated. Also if you dread of driving, you could use MARTA's park and Ride to come into Perimeter station (Dunwoody).
